brief
Between Structures explores the spaces between order and emergence, where forms shift and new relationships take shape.
The exhibition brings together works that engage, directly and indirectly, with ideas of structure. Drawing from the visual languages of architecture and tropical vegetation, the works move between systems of organisations and form of emergence. Structure becomes both a point of departure and something to be questioned, found in the built environment as much as in the irregular growth of the natural world.
Recognisable forms gradually give way to abstraction. A pattern may suggest an architectural framework, only to dissolve into colour or gesture. Elsewhere, the arrangement of shapes creates its own sense of order, independent of any recognisable reference. The familiar begins to feel less cerain, opening up new ways of seeing and experiencing shape.
The works occupy a space of transition, where the constructed meets the organic and structure remains open to change. Between Structures invites viewers to linger in these in-between spaces. Here, boundaries soften and forms overlap, allowing meaning to emerge through the relationships between things rather than through any single form.
BIO of Artist Malin lenz
Malin Lenz is a visual artist whose practice focuses on painting and mixed-media drawing.
She holds a Master’s degree in Architecture and worked as an architect in Germany for ten years. Her architectural background continues to inform her artistic practice, particularly through her strong interest in graphic forms, structures, and shapes. After moving to Singapore in 2010, she dedicated herself to painting, initially working primarily with oil paints and gradually exploring the medium’s expressive possibilities. From 2012 onwards, she developed her practice under the mentorship of local artist Ernest Chan.
Over the past decade, her practice has evolved through an ongoing exploration of techniques and materials. Alongside traditional painting media, she has incoporated diverse materials such as wood, tape, sandpaper, cardboard, wire and other building materials. This experimentation has gradually led to her current series of mixed-media drawings, where colour, texture, structure, and materiality converge.
She has created a diverse body of work that reflects different stages and experiences of her life. Her architectural sensibility remains an underlying thread, translated through an intuitive and increasingly material-driven approach to art
Her work has been exhibited in Singapore, Australia, Poland and Germany. Furthermore she has co-curated group exhibitions in Singapore. in 2018, she received and Excellence Award at the 4th Enter into Art International Installations exhibition in Germany. Her works are held in private collections in Singapore, France, Germany, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
