ABOUT INSTINC
"INSTINC is not a commercial gallery... It's the project of an artist dreamer." – Alba Escayo, Artist
This simple, powerful observation lies at the very heart of our identity. Founded in 2004 by artist Yeo Shih Yun, INSTINC was born from a desire to create a fiercely independent, artist-run space in Singapore—a place driven by curiosity, experimentation, and community rather than commercial imperatives. For over two decades, we have remained true to this vision, evolving into a vital institution that champions artistic freedom and serves as a dynamic hub for contemporary art in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Our Mission: A Laboratory for Art
Our mission is to be a laboratory for the future of art. We foster an environment where artists are encouraged to take risks, push boundaries, and engage in critical dialogue. We transcend the traditional gallery model by focusing on process-driven works and unconventional formats. Our exhibitions are curated to be audacious, multi-sensory experiences that challenge convention and invite audiences into a direct and immersive engagement with art. We showcase a diverse and fluid range of media, from raw, expressive painting and sculpture to interactive new media, visceral performance art, and large-scale installations.
A Cornerstone of Global Exchange: The Artist-in-Residence Program
A cornerstone of our mission since 2009, the INSTINC Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program has been a living crucible for creativity. By hosting more than 120 artists from around the globe, the program has cultivated an invaluable and enduring international network. It is more than just a temporary studio space; it is a catalyst for vibrant, cross-cultural exchange, sparking new ideas and fostering lifelong collaborations. The dynamic exhibitions that emerge from these residencies are a testament to the power of bringing diverse creative minds together.
Building Bridges: Partnerships and Landmark Projects
INSTINC believes in the power of art to connect and inspire across different fields. We actively seek out partnerships that foster cross-disciplinary innovation and bring contemporary art to new audiences. Our impact is demonstrated through notable collaborations with globally renowned brands such as Volvo and Guinness.
Furthermore, we take immense pride in organizing ambitious, large-scale projects, including the INSTINC D:Art Festival 2022. This landmark event, generously supported by UOB Bank and the National Arts Council’s Sustain the Arts (stART) Fund, underscored our commitment to producing and presenting significant cultural events for the public.
A New Chapter: Tanjong Pagar Distripark
In 2024, INSTINC embarked on an exciting new chapter with our relocation to the Tanjong Pagar Distripark, Singapore’s premier arts hub. This strategic move places us alongside major institutions like the Singapore Art Museum (SAM), Gajah Gallery, and Whitestone Gallery, embedding us within the nerve centre of the nation's art ecosystem.
Our history with the Distripark dates back to the immense success of our 2020 exhibition, DE:VOTED, during Singapore Art Week. Returning to this creative nexus allows us to expand our programming and deepen our impact. Here, we will continue to foster creative individuals and collectives, establishing a powerful platform for artistic exchange and groundbreaking exhibitions.
Our Vision
As we look to the future, INSTINC remains dedicated to its founding principles. We will continue to be a vital voice in Singapore’s evolving cultural landscape—a trusted platform for artists, a source of discovery for collectors and curators, and an open invitation for everyone to experience the limitless possibilities of contemporary art. We are, and always will be, the project of an artist dreamer.
"At INSTINC, we are driven by a powerful mission to uphold artistic independence and nurture a thriving community through innovative and experimental collaborations. Our unwavering vision has always been artist-focused, as we strive to create an environment where our talented artists can continue to ignite inspiration within us and our community. Together, we embark on a remarkable journey of creativity, pushing boundaries, and shaping the future of art."

The project of an artist dreamer

Written for the occasion of INSTINC’s 10th anniversary publication, 2014
The story of INSTINC is in fact a story just as much of the Singaporean artist Yeo Shih Yun – its narrative marked simultaneously by passion and energy, inexplicable coincidences and friendship.
Officially founded in 2004 by Shih Yun, INSTINC started initially in a Chinatown shophouse, then as an artist collective sharing a studio on Emerald Hill, and later evolved over the years to become an artist-run residency and art space. One of INSTINC's key missions is to encourage collaboration, cultural exchange and the sharing of ideas in contemporary art between local as well as international artists, and it also aims to establish an exciting platform where artists and the public can engage with contemporary art and critical discourses.
History of INSTINC
Having made its home in diverse locales including Chinatown, Emerald Hill, an old shop house along Mohamed Sultan Road and Clarke Quay SOHO, INSTINC has undergone various transformations since its inception in 2004. Rewinding back to 2009, INSTINC first situated in a SOHO unit just above Clarke Quay station. In 2011, INSTINC expanded further by establishing its second studio space in the Western region of Singapore, resulting in INSTINC SOHO & INSTINC STUDIOS, which operated in Kallang from 2016 to 2018. After bidding farewell to its Clarke Quay premise in 2019, INSTINC returned to SOHO centering its focus on digital art, resulting in the prestigious INSTINC D:ART FEST. 2024 not only marks the 20 years milestone of INSTINC, but a new start for the institution at Tanjong Pagar Distripark. Nestled within the spirited art hub, it offers INSTINC an exquisite place for resuming its programs at its best.
