Curatorial Statement

The exhibition title “Meta-Moments”, inspired by research psychologist Marc Brackett, refers to a pause, a small window of time that helps us to step back to see a situation in a new light. Displayed in this space is a new series of works made by three artists Wyn-Lyn Tan, SEOHYO, and Chan Wan Kyn during their residencies at INSTINC D:Art Fest. It is a collaborative exhibition within virtual space – a unique world and enclosed cave on its own. Based on personal experiences of virtual presence, The artists have collectively contemplated the boundaries between virtuality and reality, inviting visitors to take a meta-moment to set aside current uncertainties and look into a future with immense possibilities made viable by technology.

Wyn-Lyn Tan's practice is grounded in painting. She is interested in exploring new possibilities of painting through various mediums and formats such as sculptures, site-specific installations, and digital media. Her new series, fusing the analog with the digital, is both a reflection and re-interpretation of her practice.

SEOHYO’s recent art practices involve coding and rearranging digital imageries through computational animation in Nodebox, a practice she developed during the pandemic amid attempts to ease her mind. The data in her works are drawn from reality such as landscapes and natural phenomena, allowing viewers to spectate the world and our past through immersive generated imageries that are unpredictable, yet poetic.

Chan Wan Kyn is keen on the metaphysical representations of the spatial data captured from his surroundings and daily routines in the present and the past. During the residency, he extended his ongoing series “Path Project”, in which he continued the exploration of spatial elements, and interpreted concepts of the future through works that resembled spaces depicted in science fiction and films.

Chan Wan Kyn (Singapore)

Chan Wan Kyn (b. 1994, Singapore) graduated with a Bachelor and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 2019 and 2021 respectively from Purdue University, and was the pioneer class of SOTA, Singapore. Pursuing engagements at the interface of art and engineering, he continually seeks to meld Art and Engineering into a harmonious hybrid that will inspire people to see connections between the subjects that lie on opposite ends of the academic spectrum, and to create inspirational and aesthetically pleasing works of art. Performative documentation such as Lux (2021), have taken him on meditative journeys through Singapore’s Green Corridor, allowing a time of reflection where the urban meets the natural environment in Singapore and is now a continuing project.

The artist records a walk in or around places he is familiar with and feels a special connection to. The walk, which took around 15 minutes, was not limited to one spot nor a small area.

Real-time luminous intensity (lux) readings collected by the artist, coupled with corresponding GPS readings, lead to this moving map of light through Purdue University, the artist’s second home for the past 6.5 years. The walks totalled more than 41km over 6 nights.

This piece is constructed from data the artist harvested in person from a neighbourhood of District 15, a region of Singapore where he grew up. Displayed as a parametrically generated 3D model, D15 is a distinct representation of that walk experience.

Seo Hyojung (Korea)

Seo currently works as a full-time faculty member at the Samsung Art and Design Institute (SADI). Her major works include Snow White on the Table (2006), The Shape of Water (2011), Museum of Memory Told by Object (2012–2014). She has also presented the results of her Creative Computation class at A Balancing Act (2018) and One-way ticket to Mars (2019) in conjunction with Kunsthal KAdE in the Netherlands. She has participated in events such as the Asia Triennial Manchester, the KOBE Biennale, the Ogaki Biennale, the Seoul Mediacity Biennale, the Gwangju Design Biennale, and an exhibition commemorating 50 years of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Argentina. She has also collaborated with Nike, Shu Uemura, Shiseido, Guerlain, and Vogue.

The work is a natural portrait of Singapore, generated from its weather data over the past 5 years. Wind direction data determines the angle of each line, and wind speed affects its’ thickness. Some of the lines are being rotated by Perlin noise.

Wyn-Lyn Tan (Singapore)

Wyn-Lyn Tan is a fine arts painter and has been working in the traditional art space for over 15 years. Drawing upon geology, physics, alchemy and ecology, she investigates the potentiality of painting to discover space, light and new dimensions. In pushing the boundaries of painting, her works have included videos, installations, sculptural objects, and most recently, generative art videos and NFTs. She has exhibited widely, including in Singapore, New York, Norway and Art Basel Hong Kong. Her work can be found in the permanent collection of the Singapore Art Museum, as well as numerous other public and private collections.
