Visions: A Singapore-France Emerging Artist in Residency Programme

6 weeks from 22 July - 02 September

The residency is split into 2 sections: Production and Exhibition. Therefore, 6 weeks of residency includes 5 weeks of Production + 1 week of Exhibition.

Eligibility

We enthusiastically invite artists residing in France, or of French nationality, with backgrounds in research or the arts to apply. Applicants should be 21 years of age or older, with a minimum of three years of post-graduation experience in the art scene. There are no restrictions on the medium or discipline in which the artist works, encouraging a diverse range of creative expressions.

To promote French/France-based artists within the networks of contemporary art in Singapore and on a global scale

This residency program aims to provide a platform for these artists to showcase their work, engage with local audiences, and foster international collaborations. By highlighting the diverse perspectives and artistic practices of French artists, we seek to enrich the cultural landscape of Singapore and contribute to the global conversation in contemporary art.


To establish a focus for dialogue and research between the French and Singaporean art scenes

Through collaborative projects, exhibitions, and cultural exchanges, we aim to facilitate meaningful interactions and cross-cultural understanding between artists, curators, and art enthusiasts from both countries. By fostering connections and promoting artistic exchange, we strive to create opportunities for mutual learning and creative exploration within the dynamic context of contemporary art.


Residency Theme / topics

Memory and History

During the residency, we hope the artist will explore the following topics:

  • Preservation & Transmission of collective memory through architecture, rituals, and artefacts

  • Ways collective memory is valued in the two countries

  • Keywords: colonial legacies, wartime experiences, cultural exchanges and heritage, urban transformation


Outcome of Residency

The selected artist will be given an opportunity to exhibit in the gallery space of INSTINC for 1 week during the last week of their residencies,. There will be an Artist Talk scheduled during the exhibition. The artist will be included on the website of INSTINC, along with mention in the press release. During the residency, social media posts will be scheduled for the promotion of artists and projects.

Our gallery space is located at Tanjong Pagar Distripark, a art cluster situated within Central Singapore and in close proximity to the Singapore Arts Museum. Freshly renovated, the gallery is approximately 50 square meter, with white walls, cement floor, 5.8m high ceiling, and two movable partitions (230cm x 270cm x 43.5cm).

 

Areas and Facilities

  • Studio shared between you and possibly another residing Singaporean/Foreign artist of the INSTINC 23/24 Artist-in-Residence Program:

    1. Located in a prime site just beside PIE and Bukit Batok East Avenue 3, this studio offers a suitable environment for creators to focus on their production.

    2. Overall size: 1000 square feet

  • Equipments provided in the studio:

    1. Printmaking Press

    2. Bathroom within studio

    3. Good light, huge windows

    4. Tables, easels

    5. DIY Hardware Stores nearby

    6. Easily accessible food at the second floor

 

Cost of Residency

This programme covers artist accommodation, daily allowance and economy return airfare for one resident. As the host, INSTINC may require the artist to provide supporting documents such as receipts/invoices for supportable costs at the end of the residency.

JOint panel

May 24th, 2024, 9AM CET / 3PM SGT

A joint panel consisting of representatives from INSTINC Space, Fondation Fiminco, NAC, and the Embassy of France in Singapore will convene on the day to conduct interviews with all shortlisted artists. Shortlisted artists will be notified via email prior to the interview date.

Attendance at the interview is mandatory, and any shortlisted artists unable to attend will be disqualified from consideration.

How to apply

Anyone who wishes to apply for this residency is required to submit this online form.

Application requirements

  • A CV in which the candidates will mention their educational and professional background (2 pages maximum)

  • A letter of intent presenting the research ideas the artist wishes to explore during the residency (1 page maximum)

  • A portfolio of recent works representative of the artist’s approach (10 pages maximum)

  • Letters of recommendation addressed to the jury, supporting the candidates for the specific project presented in his application file (3 letters maximum) (optional)

Visa

The participant is responsible for obtaining visa from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (Government of Singapore) if visa is required for entering the country.

INSTINC does not have the responsibility for supporting visa, but is willing to provide an invitation letter if needed for visa application. Please refer to the ICA Official Website for more details.

Funding

The programme is funded by the National Arts Council (NAC) and Embassy of France in Singapore.

Please note that this residency is not a work opportunity. To legally hold exhibitions in Singapore, all artists must notify the Ministry of Manpower in Singapore for Work Pass Exempt Activities before the commence of the exhibition.
