'In the raw- New mixed-media paintings by Yeo Shih Yun. July 2007
'In the raw' explores the radical conflict between the two colorless colours, black and white, and their interaction and inter-dependence. Black and white paints are applied straight from the tubes, creating spontaneous marks; the negation of colours dramatized the texture of seeing and the beauty of the raw canvas, linen and wood shows through. The only colour will be the colour of the respective materials in all the works.
Besides acrylic paint, charcoal is also used to draw directly on the raw surface as Edgar Degas puts it," Drawing is the artist's most direct and spontaneous expression, a species of writing…" Silk-screening as well as sewing is also incorporated into this series of works to give an added dimension.
All the works have the same size, 80cm by 150cm but on three different grounds, canvas, linen and wood, featuring six works from each ground. Each work can be paired in two's, three's or even four's side-by-side, thus mixing and matching with different contrasting surfaces. There will be a total of 18 works in this exhibition.
