The inspiration behind creating this series is to experiment with abstraction and elements of alphabets, numbers and punctuations. The straight, clean edges of type are played off with the wispy brushstrokes within each piece of work in 'Imperfectly Perfect'. In recent times, type and technology used to create them become inseparable; we see perfectly printed documents(magazines, newspapers) everyday. In this body of works, the type is stripped off its function, and reduced to its purest form. Here, type becomes an element in the work, like a shape or splash of ink. This authetic letter-transfer, with all its eccentricities and imperfections accentuates the 'human touch' within each painting. Such imperfections can be a beauty in itself. Shih Yun has chosen paper to work with in this series as it is 'ready' for her to paint anytime, any moment. It compliments her spontaneous act of executing the strokes as well as the application of letter-transfer. As technological developments further influence art and typography, the most inspiring results is celebrated in this series of works.
