Gallery Description
"Visitors who saw her works remarked that the images Shih Yun’s creates endures the test of time. To put it simply, one does not get tired of it. Personally, I chose to show Shih Yun’s works in NewFinds 2003 because of the special quality in her brushstrokes, they show resistance, rigidity and complexity."
Majorie Chu - established art dealer in Singapore who runs Art Forum since the 1970s, fair director of artSingapore 2002/2004 and who is instrumental in the Art Galleries Association.
The physical energy of spontaneous mark-making intrigues Shih Yun. The development and execution of these works are gesturally instinctive and the resulting forms are not preconceived. During the process, spatial balance is explored to give the elements in her drawings space to take natural form, to move, and to breathe.
These works are executed with mixed media consisting of coloured inks, charcoal, oil sticks and acrylic paints on papers. Shih Yun has chosen paper for its ‘ready-to-use’ quality as it compliments her spontaneous painting process. Her drawings are abstract and dominantly feature bold black lines, juxtaposed with casual coloured compositions.
Her constant inspirations are Robert Motherwell, Toko Shinoda, Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock.
