MANY CULTURES.
ONE PASSION

INSTINC seeks artists whose work is unique, demonstrates clear ideas and a fresh artistic approach, and is relevant to contemporary art today.

We are proud to be one of the pioneers of artist-in-residence program in Singapore. INSTINCAIR program was started in 2009 by Singaporean artist Shih Yun Yeo. Since inception, our program has been created for artists who appreciate the importance of a conducive studio for artistic production and a very comfortable, convenient space for living. We are an independent artist-run space, set up for artists to pursue their practice with a high level of support and flexibility.

INSTINCAIR program is an international laboratory for talented artists from all over the world. At INSTINC, we provide a unique framework for young artists with limited experience to bypass large-scale institutional residences and take on a space where they are able to engage in various experiments, foster dialogue, involve critical discussion, cultivate professional and personal connections and examine the potentials of contemporary artistic production.

INSTINC develops three different residencies program to cater to different needs of artists: IgniteAIR, InteractAIR and ImmerseAIR program.  Singapore is fast becoming an art incubator; recently named as one of the world’s top 12 cities to watch for exciting contemporary art and internationally recognized for its dynamic, young, contemporary arts scene. One of the highlights of the local art scene is Gillman Barracks, a contemporary arts cluster in Singapore that is home to 17 international art galleries and the Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA).

The galleries feature diverse and ever-changing exhibitions from internationally acclaimed artists, of the region and around the world. Art Stage, which takes place annually in the first quarter of each year, is the flagship art fair of Southeast Asia, and is the major platform to discover and interact with contemporary art from Asia.

Having been housed in Chinatown, Emerald Hill and an old shop house along Mohamed Sultan Road, INSTINC has manifested itself in different ways since 2004. After its relocation in Dec 2009, INSTINC has cropped up yet again at an unexpected spot in Singapore. It is conveniently located above Clarke Quay MRT station, overlooks the Singapore River, Clarke Quay and a 10 minutes' walk to Chinatown. With a central location surrounded by historical landmarks in Singapore, artists are bound to be creatively inspired and connected with its striking and lively ambience. In addition, INSTINC is a stone's throw from the Singapore Art Museum, 8Q, Singapore National Museum, Singapore Tyler Print Institution, The Arts House and MICA (Ministry of Information and the Arts). This makes INSTINC an exquisite place for resuming its program in full swing in a brand new loft space. In 2011, INSTINC has expanded and has a second location in South-West of Singapore.

Why residencies?
Residencies are used to stimulate new ideas/projects and provides a space to work. Many professional artists find it necessary to do a residency to jump-start or continue the direction of their practice. It can be difficult to focus on your work without distractions in your own city. Thus, a residency gives an artist the time and space to experiment with new concepts or techniques and work uninterrupted by the daily tasks of life. In return artists are able to collect memories and amazing experiences.

Professional Networking
Artists are able to engage with diverse communities throughout their residency at INSTINCAIR. Therefore, professional and personal connections can be made and formed. Often, these connections can be valuable in the future and last for many years.

Since 2009, 43 artists from around the world have come to INSTINCAIR Program to experience making art in our multi-cultural society. We look forward to hosting you!
