Having been housed in Chinatown, Emerald Hill and an old shop house along Mohamed Sultan Road, INSTINC has manifested itself in different ways since 2004. In 2009, INSTINC is situated in first-of-its-kind SOHO units above the Clarke Quay MRT station. Because of its central location in a striking and lively ambiance, a stone's throw from MICA, The Arts House, Singapore Tyler Print Institute, Singapore Art Museum & SAM 8Q, it offers INSTINC an exquisite place for resuming its program in full swing in a brand new loft space. From 2011, INSTINC has expanded to its second studio space in the West area of Singapore, resulting in INSTINC SOHO & INSTINC STUDIOS.
Shih Yun Yeo, INSTINC FOUNDER
"It wasn't easy. I faced many challenges as an artist in Singapore. I learned that when I could not find a conventional way to get something done, I had to create my own way of doing things. After my return from San Francisco Art Institute in 2002, there was a lack of affordable exhibition spaces and huge difficulty in making artist friends (there were usually cliques from Lasalle or Nafa, therefore no way to be included in their group shows). I felt that I needed space to show or collaborate with other like-minded artists without going for any grant applications so that the works can be more spontaneous.Since the founding of INSTINC in 2004; we have had great times as well as miserable times. We learned the value of maintaining a focus on the main purpose of INSTINC, which is to maintain independence as an artist-run space and be a catalyst for collaborations. We learned that we were attempting to become part of a scene that is dominated by large commercial art galleries. We learned that we are different as we put artists and art as the top priority. After nine years, there are still challenges, but people we met along the way inspires us and energize us. Work is not work as many people refer to it, but something that is fun and interesting and exciting. It’s not a “job”, its a passion. "
Shih Yun Yeo graduated from San Francisco Art Institute in 2001 and has been a full-time artist since. She founded INSTINC in 2004 and has been exhibiting widely in Singapore, Europe and USA.

Katja Pál, INSTINC INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION ADVISOR
"Hooking up with like-minded artists, is something I can never get enough of! Nevertheless, in my belief sharing "the same" passion for art with an apparently dissimilar individual is a challenging, educational and constructive case. For INSTINC, I wish it would become a crater of creative interaction. “
Katja Pál is a Slovene painter and director of D'clinic Studios(Slovenia), she completed her MFA(Painting) from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2010.
Hsiung Lu Fang, INSTINC AIR coordinator
"Having personally experienced the benefits of a dedicated studio space & time for art-making, Lu-Fang hopes that INSTINC space and studio will also be a valuable, inspirational and conducive space for artists in the residency program, allowing them to combine the best of work+travel, through their exploration of a new environment and seeing how that translates into their artwork."
Lu-Fang graduated from Lasalle College of the Arts (Fine Art) in 2007 and her recent works comprise abstract paintings. She has exhibited in group shows, written art reviews and articles, and her artworks can be found in private and commissioned collections.
