INSTINC SOHO 2009-2019

About Us

Founded in 2004 by Yeo Shih Yun, INSTINC is an artist-run institution based in Singapore. INSTINC has been an active player in the arts ecology through their exhibition programming and curation, as well as through community engagement through their workshops and artists’  talks. They continue to build upon regional and international ties through their long-running residency program. The vision for INSTINC is one of collaboration and connection, producing immersive large-scale projects that cross the genres of installation, new media, performance, painting and sculpture, partnering with brands such as Volvo and Guinness in the past.

“Our mission is to maintain artistic independence and foster community through experimental collaborations. Our vision has always been artist-focussed, and we aim to foster an environment where our artists may continue to inspire us and our community” - Yeo Shih Yun, Founder and Artistic Director of INSTINC

Having been housed in Chinatown, Emerald Hill and an old shop house along Mohamed Sultan Road, INSTINC has manifested itself in different ways since 2004. In 2009, INSTINC SOHO is situated in first-of-its-kind SOHO units above the Clarke Quay MRT station. Because of its central location in a striking and lively ambiance, a stone's throw from MICA, The Arts House, Singapore Tyler Print Institute, Singapore Art Museum & SAM 8Q,  it offers INSTINC an exquisite place for resuming its program in full swing in a brand new loft space. From 2011, INSTINC has expanded to its second studio space in the West area of Singapore, resulting in INSTINC SOHO & INSTINC STUDIOS.  From 2016-2018, INSTINC STUDIOS was moved to Kallang. In April 2019, INSTINC SOHO ceased to exist in Clarke Quay premise. THE INSTINC EFFECT lives on....

"It wasn't easy. I faced many challenges as an artist in Singapore. I learned that when I could not find a conventional way to get something done, I had to create my own way of doing things. After my return from San Francisco Art Institute in 2002, there was a lack of affordable exhibition spaces and huge difficulty in making artist friends (there were usually cliques from Lasalle or Nafa, therefore no way to be included in their group shows). I felt that I needed space to show or collaborate with other like-minded artists without going for any grant applications so that the works can be more spontaneous.Since the founding of INSTINC in 2004; we have had great times as well as miserable times. We learned the value of maintaining a focus on the main purpose of INSTINC, which is to maintain independence as an artist-run space and be a catalyst for collaborations.  We learned that we were attempting to become part of a scene that is dominated by large commercial art galleries. We learned that we are different as we put artists and art as the top priority.  After nine years, there are still challenges, but people we met along the way inspires us and energize us.  Work is not work as many people refer to it, but something that is fun and interesting and exciting. It’s not a “job”, its a passion. "

"Hooking up with like-minded artists, is something I can never get enough of! Nevertheless, in my belief sharing "the same" passion for art with an apparently dissimilar individual is a challenging, educational and constructive case. For INSTINC, I wish it would become a crater of creative interaction. “
